Virginia vs. Kansas State Game 2 Live Updates | NCAA Baseball Super Regional (2024)

No. 12 Virginia (46-15) defeated Kansas State (35-26) 10-4 on Saturday afternoon at Disharoon Park to win the Charlottesville Super Regional at the 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament and clinch a trip to Omaha for the College World Series. Bottom of the 9th
Now playing third base after coming up with that huge three-run triple, Luke Hanson fields the grounder from Bishop and throws to first for the out.
Parsons hits a grounder up the middle and Godbout makes a nice play, throwing across his body to record the out.
Chase Hungate strikes out Ingram swinging and the game is over.

Virginia beats Kansas State 10-4 and is headed back to Omaha for the College World Series for the second year in a row.

Top of the 9th
Kansas State has made a pitching change, replacing Neighbors with righty Josh Wintroub (5.93 ERA), who will face the top of the UVA batting order.
O'Ferrall flies out to center field.
Ethan Anderson hits a line drive into center field for a one-out single.
Saucke hits a high bouncer to second base and the ball takes so long to come down that by the time Day fielded it, he has nowhere to go with the ball, putting runners on first and second with one out.
Ford hits a line drive to first and Bishop makes the catch. Saucke does well to get back to first to avoid the double play.
Jacob Ference hits a line drive deep to right-center and it lands just beyond the glove of center fielder Brendan Jones. Ford and Saucke score easily and Ference gets to third with a big-time two-run triple to extend Virginia's lead to 7-4.
Didawick draws a walk, giving UVA runners on the corners with two outs for Henry Godbout.
Didawick steals second base uncontested. It doesn't end up mattering because Godbout draws a walk to load the bases.
Kansas State makes another pitching change, replacing Wintroub with lefty JJ Slack (4.32 ERA). UVA makes a counter move, pinch hitting the righty Luke Hanson for Eric Becker. Slack will face Hanson with the bases loaded and two outs.
The pinch hit pays off for Virginia, as Luke Hanson hits a grounder down the third base line that just barely stays fair and makes it all the way to the left field corner for a bases-clearing triple. Three runs come home and Virginia leads 10-4.
Whalen grounds out to shortstop to end the inning, but Virginia scores five in the top of the ninth to take a 10-4 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

UVA 10, KSU 4 | Mid 9th

Bottom of the 8th
Kyan Lodice drives one to deep right-center field and despite Whalen's valiant attempt to rob the homer, which flipped him over the wall, the ball clears the wall for a solo home run. Virginia's lead is back down to one at 5-4.
That'll do it for Angelo Tonas, as Brian O'Connor makes the call and brings in righty Chase Hungate (3.86 ERA) to face Kaelen Culpepper.
Culpepper grounds out to shortstop.
Bay hits a line drive to center field and Whalen makes the catch for out No. 2.
English hits a routine fly ball to right field and Saucke makes the catch to end the inning. We head to the ninth with UVA still leading, but only by one thanks to Lodice's solo home run.

UVA 5, KSU 4 | End 8th

Top of the 8th
Ference pops up to center field.
Didawick hits a line drive to right field and English makes a nice running catch at the warning track.
Neighbors walks Godbout on four pitches to give UVA a two-out baserunner.
Eric Becker hits a line drive that gets down in the gap in right-center and reaches the wall. Godbout sprints around the bases and slides in just ahead of the tag to give Virginia a 5-3 lead.
Whalen hits a soft grounder back to the mound and Neighbors makes the play but Becker's two-out double and Godbout's speedy baserunning have given the Cavaliers a crucial insurance run.

UVA 5, KSU 3 | Mid 8th

Bottom of the 7th
Woolfolk issues a leadoff walk to Jaden Parsons.
After Woolfolk throws over to first several times in a row, Parsons attempts to steal and Ference throws him out at second, wiping away the leadoff baserunner.
Ingram hits a line drive to center field and it goes off the wall for a one-out double.
Kansas State pinch hits Danniel Rivera for Raphael Pelletier with a runner in scoring position. That'll do it for Jay Woolfolk, who exits the game with a statline of three earned runs on six hits and seven strikeouts and he is responsible for the runner on second.
Replacing Woolfolk is lefty Angelo Tonas (3.79 ERA), who pitches for the second game in a row after getting four outs for Virginia on Friday.
Tonas gets Rivera to fly out to Whalen in shallow center field for the second out of the inning.
Whalen stays busy in center, catching a fly ball off the bat of Jones to end the inning. Tonas does his job and preserves Virginia's 4-3 lead.

UVA 4, KSU 3 | End 7th

Top of the 7th
Kansas State has made a pitching change, replacing Jackson Wentworth (6.0 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 5 K) with righty reliever Tyson Neighbors (3.93 ERA) to face the top of the UVA batting order.
Neighbors strikes out O'Ferrall looking.
Anderson draws a walk, but then gets caught on a pickoff move by Neighbors, who eventually tags him out in a rundown.
Saucke draws a walk to give UVA a two-out baserunner.
Neighbors throws a wild pitch and Saucke advances to second.
Ford hits a high fly ball to the left field corner and it stays in play and gets caught by Ingram to end the inning.

UVA 4, KSU 3 | Mid 7th

Bottom of the 6th
Woolfolk strikes out Brady Day swinging for his sixth strikeout of the game.
Make that seven strikeouts for Woolfolk, who gets English swinging for the second out.
Bishop grounds out to third and it's a nice 1-2-3 inning for Woolfolk, who needed just 10 pitches to retire the side. Woolfolk is at 91 pitches through six innings.

UVA 4, KSU 3 | End 6th

Top of the 6th
Didawick lines out to center field.
Godbout hits a line drive into left field for a one-out single.
Becker hits a fly ball down the left field line and Ingram makes a nice catch on the run in foul territory.
Whalen grounds out to second base to end the inning.

UVA 4, KSU 3 | Mid 6th

Bottom of the 5th
Bobby Whalen might have to get a timeshare at the warning track. He makes a catch near the wall in center field for the third time today, this time catching a deep fly ball off the bat of Chuck Ingram.
Woolfolk strikes out Pelletier swinging.
Back to the top of the KSU batting order, Brendan Jones turns on the first pitch from Woolfolk and crushes it over the fence in right field for a solo home run, pulling the Wildcats back to within one at 4-3.
Lodice hits a line drive into the gap in left-center and Whalen can't quite get there in time. Lodice turns on the jets and makes it to third with a two-out triple. UVA pitching coach Drew Dickinson visits Woolfolk on the mound after giving up a home run and a triple.
Culpepper takes Woolfolk deep to left-center field but Bobby Whalen is able to track it down at the warning track and make a tough catch before crashing into the wall. That saves a run, ends the inning, and preserves Virginia's 4-3 lead.

UVA 4, KSU 3 | End 5th

Top of the 5th
Eric Becker hits an opposite-field line drive down into the left field corner and strides into second with a standup leadoff double.
Whalen hits a grounder to shortstop and he's able to beat out the long throw from Culpepper for an infield single.
Griff O'Ferrall lays down a bunt and the throw from Wentworth is in time to get him out at first, says first base ump Jeff Head. UVA challenges the play and the call is overturned. O'Ferrall is safe at first and Virginia has the bases loaded with no outs for Ethan Anderson.
Wentworth strikes out Anderson swinging for the first out of the inning.
Saucke hits a grounder to first and Bishop goes home for the force-out. The bases are still loaded but now there are two outs.
Henry Ford hits a line drive past the diving attempt of KSU third baseman Jaden Parsons and into left field for a single, scoring both Whalen and O'Ferrall. The true freshman and Charlottesville native delivers the big hit to give Virginia a 4-2 lead.
Ference strikes out swinging to end the inning, but Henry Ford has put the Cavaliers back in front 4-2 with his two-run single.

Woolfolk strikes out English on three pitches.
Bishop hits a deep fly ball to right field and Saucke makes the catch at the warning track.
Parsons strikes out swinging, Woolfolk's fourth strikeout of the game, to end the fourth inning with the score still tied at 2-2.

UVA 2, KSU 2 | End 4th

Top of the 4th
Ference grounds out to shortstop.
Didawick strikes out swinging, Wentworth's third strikeout of the game.
Godbout his a fly ball down the left field line and Culpepper makes a fantastic play, running over from short and making a very tough catch to end the inning. After posting three hits in the first inning, Virginia has yet to get a hit since then.

UVA 2, KSU 2 | Mid 4th

Bottom of the 3rd
Jones hits a deep fly ball to center field and Whalen makes the catch.
Lodice flies out to left field.
Play is stopped and UVA's athletic trainer visits Brian McGuire Jay Woolfolk on the mound. Woolfolk throws a couple warm-up pitches and says he's good to go. Not sure what was/is bothering him.
Culpepper hits a fly ball to shallow left field and O'Ferrall calls off Didawick, but he can't make the catch. Can't say for sure if Didawick would've made the catch, but he would've had a better chance than O'Ferrall who was running backwards. Culpepper reaches second with what is ruled a double.
Day hits a fly ball to shallow left and this time it's Eric Becker who goes back and makes the catch to end the inning.

UVA 2, KSU 2 | End 3rd

Top of the 3rd
Anderson works an eight-pitch walk to start the third inning.
Saucke gets great contact again, but this time his fly ball falls short of the wall in left field.
Ford hits an infield pop-up and it's caught by Day at second.
Anderson tries to steal second and he never had a chance; Pelletier throws him out to end the inning.

UVA 2, KSU 2 | Mid 3rd

Bottom of the 2nd
Nick English singles to right field and Kansas State has a leadoff baserunner for the second inning in a row.
David Bishop singles up the middle and English goes first to third, giving the Wildcats runners on the corners with no outs.
Bishop steals second.
Jaden Parsons grounds out to shortstop, scoring English from third to tie the game at 2-2.
Woolfolk catches Chuck Ingram looking at a called strike three for the second out.
Woolfolk strikes out Raphael Pelletier swinging to end the inning, stranding a runner on third, but Kansas State pulls even on the RBI grounds out from Parsons.

UVA 2, KSU 2 | End 2nd

Eric Becker goes down swinging, Wentworth's second strikeout of the game.
Bobby Whalen swings at the first pitch and grounds out to second base.
O'Ferrall hits one back to Wentworth, who bobbles it for a moment but then gets the ball to first for the easy out to end the inning.

Jay Woolfolk issues a leadoff walk to Brendan Jones.
Jones steals on the first pitch and gets in ahead of the throw from Ference.
Kyan Lodice lays down a bunt to third and Becker charges in and records the out, but Jones advances to third with one out.
Kaelen Culpepper drives one to deep center and Whalen makes the catch at the warning track, but it's plenty deep enough to score Jones from third to get the Wildcats on the board. 2-1 UVA.
Brady Day hits a deep fly ball to straightaway center field and Whalen again saunters back to the warning track and makes the catch to end the inning, but Kansas State is on the board thanks to some small ball to score Brendan Jones.

Casey Saucke crushes the first pitch he sees deep over the fence in left-center field for a solo home run. UVA strikes first and leads 1-0.
Henry Ford hits a sharp grounder up the middle and Kaelen Culpepper makes a diving stop, but his throw to first is low and first baseman David Bishop is unable to dig it out. It's ruled an infield single for Ford.
A pitch gets away from KSU catcher Raphael Pelletier and Ford tries to steal second. He's called out on the field, but the umps review the play and overturn the call, so he's safe at second.
Jacob Ference draws a walk.
Harrison Didawick swings at the first pitch and drives it into right-center field for a single, scoring Ford from second base to make it 2-0 Virginia.
Henry Godbout grounds out to third to end the inning, but Virginia draws first blood on the Casey Saucke solo homer and the Harrison Didawick RBI single.

Today's game is set to start at 3pm and will be televised on ESPN2.
