Companions - Fallout 4 Guide - IGN (2024)

Around a dozen companions will appear in Fallout 4. Along with the familiar Dogmeat the Dog and Mr. Handy the Robot, new characters like Piper, Preston Garvey, and others can become companions.

Players may have one companion accompanying them at a time and may switch between them. Some companions may be Romanced, forming relationships through various gameplay.

Preston Garvey

Preston is the de facto leader of the Minutemen, a Faction committed to the protection of innocents. Preston is first encountered in Concord at the Museum of Freedom. It's possible to initiate a romance with Preston.

• Dislikes: Selfish and violent acts, chem addiction, murder and stealing
• Weapon of Choice: Laser Musket
• Recruit Preston by completing The First Step.

Codsworth

Codsworth is a robotic servant and the first potential companion encountered by the player. He hands around your old house in Sanctuary.

• Likes: Generous and nice acts, modifying weapons and armor
• Dislikes: Selfish acts, chem addiction and use, murdering, lying and stealing
• Weapon of Choice: Melee
• Recruit Codsworth after completing Out of Time.

Piper

Piper is a reporter in Diamond City. She is a fierce and aggressive character and a good combatant. It's possible to initiate a romance with Piper.

• Likes: Generous and anti-authoritative behavior, picking un-owned locks
• Dislikes: Selfish, too submissive or too violent acts, murder and stealing owned property
• Weapon of Choice: Pistol
• Recruit Piper after completing Story of the Century.

Nick Valentine

Nick is a Synth prototype and private investigator stationed in Diamond City. Nick is a smooth-talking hacker and locksmith.

• Likes: Nice and interrogative behavior, hacking unowned terminals
• Dislikes: Deferential and overly violent acts, murder and stealing
• Weapon of Choice: Revolver and melee
• Recruit Nick at the conclusion of Unlikely Valentine.

Affinity Perk

Close to Metal - Gain 50% faster terminal cooldown and an extra guess when hacking terminals

Curie

Curie is a modified Mr. Handy instilled with a personality matrix based on a variety of prominent scientists. Curie lives in a hidden section of Vault 81. It's possible to initiate a romance with Curie after her personal quest.

• Likes: Peaceful, nice or slightly mean acts, healing dogmeat
• Dislikes: Selfish acts, chem addiction, murder and stealing
• Weapon of Choice: Flamethrower
• Recruit Curie at the conclusion of Hole in the Wall.

Deacon

Deacon is a Railroad sympathizer and a compulsive liar. He adapts his attire constantly changing appearance to match his surroundings. He is a skilled hacker and infiltrator.

• Likes: Nice and slightly mean acts, hacking, picking locks and lying
• Dislikes: Violent acts, chem addiction and use, murder
• Weapon of Choice: Rifle
• Deacon will join you in the Tradecraft mission.

Cloak & Dagger - +20% Sneak Attack damage, +40% Stealth Boy duration

MacCready

Maccready is a mercenary and former Gunner now living in Goodneighbor. He is a skilled combat sidekick. It's possible to initiate a romance with MacCready.

• Likes: Violent acts, lockpicking and stealing, and haggling for better rates
• Dislikes: Overly peaceful, nice, and mean acts, chem addiction, murder
• Weapon of Choice: Sniper Rifle
• You can recruit Maccready by paying his fee at The Third Rail in Goodneighbor.

Killshot - +20% V.A.T.S headshot accuracy in theory, in reality much higher

Dogmeat

Dogmeat is a dog. He has powerful search capabilities and can often locate hidden items. Dogmeat can also hold and pin enemies.

• Likes: Following you around, a pat on the head
• Dislikes: Cats, probably
• Dogmeat can be recruited outside the Red Rocket Truck Stop just south of Sanctuary.

None (Attack Dog Player Perk can be applied to Dogmeat)

Strong

Strong is a Super Mutant companion and an extremely powerful fighter.

• Likes: Generous and peaceful, but also violent acts, cannibalization and murder
• Dislikes: Selfish or overly mean acts, using power armor vertibirds, picking locks and haggling
• Weapon of Choice: Assault rifles, melee
• Strong can be recruited at Trinity Tower.

Berserk - +20% Weapon Damage after dropping below 25% health

Danse

Danse is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. A powerful fighter, Dance is very handy in battle. It's possible to initiate a romance with Danse.

• Likes: Nice or violent acts, using power armor or vertibirds, modifying armor and weapons
• Dislikes: overly mean or peaceful acts, chem use, murder and stealing
• Weapon of Choice: Laser Rifle
• Can be recruited at the Cambridge Police Station.

Know Your Enemy - +20% Damage against Feral Ghouls, Super Mutants, Synths

Cait

Cait is a former raider and rough-around-the-edges Scrounger. Cait is a drug addict, a harsh critic of moral norms, and a vicious combatant. It's possible to initiate a romance with Cait.

• Likes: Selfish and violent acts, alcohol use, chem use (before quest), lockpicking and stealing
• Dislikes: Generous, mean and peaceful acts, murder, chem use (after quest)
• Weapon of Choice: Shotgun, melee
• Cait can be recruited in the Combat Zone.

Hanco*ck

Hanco*ck is a Ghoul living in Goodneighbor. Instantly identifiable from his Revolutionary-era uniform, Hanco*ck is a dangerous rogue and fighter. It's possible to initiate a romance with Hanco*ck.

• Likes: Generous, peaceful or violent (but fair) acts, chem use
• Dislikes: Selfish or overly mean acts, murder and stealing
• Weapon of Choice: Shotgun
• Hanco*ck can be recruited in Goodneighbor.

X6-88

X6-88 is an Institute-allied Synth and a dangerous ranged fighter.

• Likes: Selfish or peaceful acts, using power armor, hacking, modifying weapons and armor, and haggling for better deals
• Dislikes: Generous or nice acts, chem addiction and use, using vertibirds
• Weapon of Choice: Laser Rifle
• X6-88 can be recruited in The Institute.
