The upstart Lions head to San Francisco to battle the 49ers for a spot in the Super Bowl in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.
Detroit is on the verge of the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance. The Lions have more playoff wins this season— home victories over the Rams and Buccaneers— than they previously had in the Super Bowl era.
Jared Goff has excelled in the playoffs, with near-spotless performances the last two weeks. Detroit’s defense, while suspect at times in the regular season, has stepped up to the plate with several key stops— including linebacker Derrick Barnes' game-sealing interception of Baker Mayfield last weekend.
San Francisco, meanwhile, survived a scare from the Packers to reach its fourth NFC Championship Game in the last five years. The 49ers rallied out of a 21-14 hole in the fourth quarter, winning in spite of an injury to star wideout Deebo Samuel.
Quarterback Brock Purdy compiled an up-and-down performance, struggling until the pivotal final drive. Christian McCaffery, meanwhile, chipped in two touchdowns, including the eventual game-winning score.
